چکیده

The postural stability of bipedal robots is investigated in perspective of foot-rotation during locomotion. With foot already rotated, the biped is modeled as an underactuated kinematic structure. The stability of such biped robots is analyzed by introducing the concept of rotational stability. The rotational stability investigates whether a biped would lead to a flat-foot posture or the biped would topple over. The rotational stability is quantified as a ground reference point named ‘rotational stability index (RSI)’ point. Conditions are established to achieve rotational stability during biped locomotion using the concept of the RSI point. The applicability of the RSI point is illustrated through experimentation for the landing stability analysis of the bipedal jumping gaits. The traditional stability criteria such as Zero-moment-point (ZMP) [2] and Foot-Rotation-Indicator (FRI) [1] are not applicable to analyze biped’s postural stability when foot is already rotated. The RSI point is established as a stability criteria for planar bipedal locomotion in presence of foot-rotation.

A robotic device for understanding neuromechanical interactions during standing balance control.

Postural stability in standing balance results from the mechanics of body dynamics as well as active neural feedback control processes. Even when an animal or human has multiple legs on the ground, active neural regulation of balance is required. When the postural configuration, or stance, changes, such as when the feet are placed further apart, the mechanical stability of the organism changes,...

Monitoring the Postural Stability of Planar Bipedal Robots using the Moment-Height Stability Measure

Robotics researchers have studied the stability maintenance requirements of bipedal robots since they are inherently unstable. An accurate postural stability measure is required to monitor their dynamic equilibrium conditions. In this article, the novel Moment-Height Stability (MHS) measure, which has previously been developed for monitoring the postural stability of wheeled mobile robots, is d...

Foot Placement Indicator for Balance of Planar Bipeds with Point Feet

If humanoid robots are to be used in society, they should be able to maintain their balance. Knowing where to step is crucially important. In this paper we contribute an algorithm that can compute the foot step location such that bipedal balance is maintained for planar bipeds with point feet and an arbitrary number of non‐massless links on a horizontal and ...

Effect of Step Length and Step Period on Walking Speed and Energy Consumption: a Parameter Study

Stability and performance are two main issues in motion of bipeds. To ensure stability of motion, a biped needs to follow specific pattern to comply with a stability criterion such as zero moment point. However, there are infinity many patterns of motion which ensure stability, so one might think of achieving better performance by choosing proper parameters of motion. Step length and step perio...
